Kanye West Interrupts Taylor Swift’s VMA Acceptance Speech

The Internet was on fire yesterday as music fans around the world discussed Kanye West’s odd behavior at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards.  If you missed all the drama, this is what went down at the awards ceremony:

After having been announced as the winner for the Best Female Video Category for “You Belong with Me”, an excited and smiling Taylor Swift went on stage to receive her “moon man”.  Swift had just began her acceptance speech when West stormed the stage, took the microphone from Swift and said “Taylor, I’m really happy for you, I’ll let you finish, but Beyoncé has one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time!”

Initially, people were not sure if Kanye’s appearance on stage was part of the VMA presentations. It soon became clear to the audience that it was not part of the show and that Kanye had gone out of line.  After his comment, West was booed by the audience. West handed the microphone back to Swift but the country singer was too stunned to talk.  People applauded and gave Taylor Swift a standing ovation.

Beyonce rectified the situation when she won her award for Best Video of the Year by calling Taylor Swift back on stage so that the country singer could finish her acceptance speech.

Within hours of the incident, Kanye posted this apology on his blog: “”I’m sooooo sorry to Taylor Swift and her fans and her mom. I spoke to her mother right after and she said the same thing my mother would’ve said. She is very talented! I like the lyrics about being a cheerleader and she’s in the bleachers! I’m in the wrong for going on stage and taking away from her moment!”

Kanye also appeared on The Jay Leno Show yesterday apologizing once more to the country singer:

So, do you think Kanye West went out of line or was he just “keeping it real”? Do you think his apology is acceptable?

He did seem sincere, but then I saw today he has not made any attempts to contact Taylor Swift to apologize. So, he may just be a good talker, and hey why not explain why he did it? But, hey everyone makes mistakes and does stupid stuff. As a society we all need to be better people but part of doing that means forgiving people for there mistakes. You don’t need to be a fan but enough bashing him personally.

Hello Eric… thanks for your feedback and insight… well put! Btw, he actually called Taylor personally (this morning) after she made an appearance on the view to apologize and Taylor accepted his apology.

I dont think he was sincere at all. If he was, he would have contacted Taylor personaly, not through Jay Leno. I think he was totally out line going up there and taking the mic from her. It had nothing to do with him anyways. We all have our opinions about things, but there is a right way to express them. Eric said in the comment above that we all make mistakes. Yeah. We do. But this isnt the first time he has done something like this. How many times can someone make the same mistake till we say ENOUGH already.

I think it’s nice that he apologized and he appears to have meant it. But if you think about, it was Taylors first VMA and he took that moment away from her. I just feel so bad for her. She is an amazingly talented young woman and deserves every award and good press she gets. I only hope that Kayne learns to keep his mouth shut. The last 2 or so years he keeps doing stupid things and pissing off his fans.

Hi Amanda… thank you very much for your comments and opinions. I definitely understand where you are coming from. As a side note: Kanye actually called Taylor personally (this morning) after she made an appearance on the view to apologize and Taylor accepted his apology. Time will tell (by his future actions) if he is truly sincere…

  • Amanda says:

Yeah I just read that he had called, but in my eyes, a little too late. haha I stand by my comment :) true enough though, time will tell.

I have no respect for those who don’t have respect for others. He stepped in on her big moment…that’s rude and disrespectful. I’m not sure how the VMAs work, whether it’s based on a fan voting system or what, but at the time Taylor Swift accepted the award had the final vote not already been cast? In my mind it’s a “the people have spoken” type of thing. You win some, you lose some Kanye. Move on. Accept it for what it is. Besides, he was in the middle of something that had nothing to do with him AND isn’t this something that has happened with him before? Kanye West storms the stage in protest yet again! Big shocker. It makes me wonder how embarassed Beyonce was…I’m sure she was mortified.

The only thing I can say for him is that when Jay Leno asked him what his mom would have thought he looked pretty sincere. It looked like that question got to his heart. It looked like it bothered him that his mom would have disapproved. I’m sure his apology was sincere to Taylor Swift, the act itself was just uncalled for.

I’m sure most of America has heard about the incident. Kanye West is a douche bag, that was totally uncalled for this is not the first artist he has done this to nor the first time he went off in this manner.Kanye is responsible for his own action, even Beyonce’ was not going to co-sign for his shenanigans Beyonce was actually shocked and displeased at kanye’s behavior.Like rapper Pittbull stated Kanye West knows who to do that kind of stuff to.I dont think this happen by accident people like Kanye West,Paris Hilton,Perez Hilton, and others act out to advance their personal careers. A source has told me that its no coincidence that Kanye West outburst happen at the VMA’s i hear he is coming out with a new product like a cologne or something.Whatever he hope to accomplish back fired on him so i know he’s not going to promote his product now cause no ones going to buy it.People will continue to play his music,Radio station will still play his music as i type this message his song is being played somewhere.
The one thing i cant understand is how this has turned into a race issue.Kanye will continue to be kanye and those like him will always starve for our attention even if it is negative.
